1) The BFO oscillation is stopping, or
2) The BFO signal is too weak to be displayed properly by the counter.

issue (we do mixed mode nets with MT63 also).

DMM indicates the same as when you have nothing connected to the leads

It turns out the element I had was bad. I bought a couple today and it turns
out RS has 3 different electret elements. The one I had has 3 wires which
makes it easier to use an outboard bias supply. They also have a PC mount
one with 2 leads and one with 2 wire leads. I used the 2 wire lead on

I see at least three options:
1. Buy new. A commodity is what they are. They are to the point of
plug and play. They are bought and sold as such.
2. Buy a used one and if necessary bring it up to specs with add-ons, new
valves, etc..

The Radio Shack electret elements can be used to make a very effective (and
cheap) microphone. I've used them a number of times, as have many others.
Perhaps you did get a bad one, but that's easy enough to verify by simply
trying another one--they only cost a couple of bucks. One thing though
I am quite aware that the gurus at Elecraft
are extremely busy and need evidence that firmware changes are
beneficial. That is why I asked that those with the KRX3 should try my
method and report their findings.
The K3 has a great CW receiver but SSB improvements seem to be on the
back burner
In contests and especially 160m SSB there are several stations on top of each
other. Assuming that the majority of power is within a few hundred Hz, the
notch in the middle possibly can reduce interference from stations 500-1000
Hz away.

You are correct that with a 3 lead electret - the V+ and the AF should
both be corrected to pin 1. The remaining pin of the mic element should
connect to pin 7 or pin 8.

I tried a RS electret element I have here and the audio is distorted and weak
- do I have a bad element or am I doing something wrong? I wired the
element directly to the mic wires bypassing the transformer in the mic with
no cap or resistor. The red wire and audio to pin 1 and the ground to pin

Following the thread concerning PLL errors on the higher frequency
bands, I decided to run a check on my K3.
I found that at a FP temp of over 38deg, I got a PLL2 error

If you are after quality, THP make good amplifiers. You can now buy them in
the USA. (Also for VK Tokyo is nice and close.relatively)
The market for Elecraft to produce amplifiers that are significantly better
while not costing very much more than the THP ones is fairly limited.
