Yes, the lowest transverter IF is 7-MHz. Of course you can operate
the K3 in low power transceive on any frequency from 490-KHz to
32-MHz if in the TEST mode. Only issue is VFO readout is the IF and
not the operating frequency of a converter or transverter.
But say you use 3.472-3.478

Yes you are right , The output from the K3 is degraded above 7.3
if you don't have the general coverage option, That's another reason
to have 3.5 to 4.0 mhz IF frequency .
What it amounts to is not enough drive.

It is a current choke in either configuration. Take a look at the
assembly manual and that should be apparent.if you compare the balun
schematic with standard schematics for current chokes.

Two suggestions.
1. Since the antenna is different in the morning, check that connections are
not getting damp inside overnight.
2. After the first ATU TUNE cycle, press the same button again within a second
or two. This will start the "try harder" tuning cycle.

ignore the 4 and read the frequency directly in kHz.

If you do switch to ANT2 by mistake and transmit, the K3 will not be damaged.
It is very well protected against open loads and shorts at the antenna jacks.
Chances are you'll realized quickly that you're on the wrong antenna since RX
noise will drop.

I can attest that you won't hurt your K3 if you're on the wrong antenna
connector, I've done it. The Antenna selection is remembered by band
[at least]. Somehow, I managed to get 30m on ANT2 which had nothing

When I was trying to get the Yaesu FTM-10 installed in my Miata
to receive AM broadcast, HRO Sunnyvale let me run through 4 or 5
2M-70cm whips to find one that would allow AM reception. I ended
up with a small Larson whip and a lot of respect for a store
which would let me take the antennas out
