That is exactly how the tuning relay works. It interrupts the ptt line
so the amp cannot key while the SteppIR is moving. N8LP also makes a
box for those that do not have the new controller that will do the same
thing.

is as follows:
K3 at any of 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400 bps
K3 with CONFIG: AUTOINF = AUTO 1 or norm
SteppIR set to KENW mode, LED 6 set when Select is held for 2 or 3 seconds
SteppIR Y cable connecting K3 to PC
Perhaps that was why someone suggested disconnecting pin 7... Have you tried it?

RS232 tester shows RTS (pin 7) set all the time as is expected with cable
wiring
I should have pointed out that the specific problem I am trying to solve now
is a hard connect from K3 RS232 port to SteppIR Data In port. No Y cable,
no PC based software involved. I am not convinced that the SteppIR is
listening.
