Hi all,
I'd like to compile of list of microphones folks are using with the K3.
If you have a minute and would like to contribute to the project, please
reply to me with:
Mic model:
Element type: (electret, condenser, dynamic etc)
Bias used? Yes or no
K3 Mic Sel configuration: L or H
Thanks,
Fred
I find that with the equalization I can make any mike sound good with K3. A $15
computer headset or a $20 Best Buy hand mike need lots of equalization. Heil
HC4 sounds good as is.
One of the great features of K3 beside the equalizers is ability to use
computer microphones/headsets without

Not ANY mic, but most mics. Professional condensers,

Hi Fred,
My K3 is only halfway assembled, so I cannot yet report
anything of substance to you.

Good morning Erik: If you would like a good comparison between a dynamic mic
and the MH-2 electret mic, I would be glad to do it with you. I am using a
dynamic mic normally used with a commercial vhf/uhf mobile which also has the
UP/DOWN keys and have compared with the electret MH-2 hand mic

Ron about the time when the famous D-104 was in every shack with a vy
wide and rather flat response... Astatic also sold a10-C (ceramic) and the
10-D (dynamic) elements/mics that were shaped for voice with a peak in the mid
VOICE range. I still have my 10-C and the Astatic paper

It doesn't look very flat on the graph.

Has anyone connected a preamplified D104 to either the
front or rear panel? Are there any added parts
required?
I've had my K3 for 3 weeks now and only a couple
fleeting thoughts about a microphone for it. ;-)

No, but it should work FB because that amp also provides a decent impedance
match for modern rigs.
The D-104 crystal or ceramic elements want to see a load of about 50K ohms,
and hooking them directly to a low impedance input like the K2 or K3 skews
the frequency response.
Don't forget you
I've been using a D-104 that has the preamp in the base with a K-2 for
quite awhile. I do much more cw than ssb, but I've gotten quite a few
unsolicited compliments on the sound over the years.

Jerry,
All you need to do to use that HC-5 element with the K3 is change the
mic plug wiring. AF to pin 1, PTT to pin 2, grounds to pins 7 and 8. I
have the same arrangement here and it works fine.

much-loved D-104 and I've kept it alive with Bob
I doubt if you'd see any advantage, Bob, unless you are connecting it
directly to the mic input (no amplifier in the base). You need to match the
50k ohm impedance of the element to a 1,000 ohm (thereabouts) impedance at
the input of the K3 (and most modern rigs). If you have the D-104 with the

I have often thought about replacing the crystal element in my 50-
year-old D104 with one of the Radio Shack electret elements, although
some might call that heresy.
I dropped the mike once (a long time ago) and the element came
loose. I sent the head to Astatic asking them to repair it

I have been using the D-104 (with base pre-amp) on my K3 for several

I've been reading the mail about mics for the K3. I am using a Yaesu MD-100 for
my FT-897D (which I will be selling upon the arrival of my K3). It's a very
nice desk-top, simple mic with 8 pin configuration which of course does not
match the K3 pin outs.
Is there anyone who can suggest how I
Tom,
That's easy, just open the mic plug and re-wire it for the K3 pinout -
or if you want to continue using it with Yaesu equipment, build a Yaesu
to Elecraft adapter.

So what everyone is saying is we have Kenwood wiring with the need of
the Icom element. I have a mini pro , pro light whatever they called

A quick question for whoever. I saw mention that the K-3 was essentially wired
like a Kenwood. I already own a Heil headset. Do I just need a new adapter
set up for Kenwood and plug in or do you need to order a headset/mic from
Elecraft?

You only need a Heil AD-1K...I used mine from

works fine including the foot switch connection.

You can get the Kenwood cables for the Heil mics and they will work
(according to Chip @ Heil). I bought one yesterday but have not yet installed
it.
HOWEVER, you must be sure to turn the bias OFF in the mic selection menu of
the K3 if you are going to use a non-Elecraft mic. The MH2
