Jean Louis,
Yes, there have been some problems with the AF knobs have been known
to crack and get loose.
If you will send Elecraft support an email they will send you a
replacement.

Maybe it's about the K2. There's a nice sheet out there explaining all
of the knobs..there is also the "Nifty Accessories" booklet which is
very handy -- and it's laminated for use during Field Day.

Here's my hint for the manual. Download the PDF version and use the find

Well, not being necessary in the 1st place would be simpler. But
replacement has been necessary for many K3 owners. And evidently it
remains so.

I just noticed my VFO B knob was cracked; I rarely use it, so don't know how
long it has been that way. A three minute phone call to Elecraft and the
replacement is already in First Class USPS mail. I don't know how it could
get any simpler than that. No mention of any charge either.

Lou,
I am not certain what all of you are trying to accomplish with the
Ten-Tec (or other) knob rings. Do you remove the rubber ring that is
supplied with the K3 knob? Or do you put it over the top of the
existing rubber ring?
The stock K3 rubber ring seems just fine to me.

I found one of the knob covers at Dayton (it always amazes me what's in the
flea market there!). The ring fits over the K3 knob easily. It has a rubber
ridge on the inside of the ring that conforms to the Ten-Tec knobs, but
tends to stick up a bit on the K3's knob. It's not a perfect, seamless fit

The four small controls are digital encoders - not pots. they have some play
because they are also pushbutton type switches. The encoders have the

The gritty-ness is not a problem...you are actually feeling the
detents in the encoder. These are encoders and not pots. I had never
noticed the slight side to side movement of the shafts.

Knut,
I agree. I like the "gritty" feel, as it is consistent with these
functions being changed in discrete steps, not continually.

My two concentric pots have a very good feel to them (serno #82). The four

wobble in them, but I don't find it objectonable. The "gritty" feel I am
sure is intentional; these are indents indicating each new encoder position
K3 #584 must have had the old audio pots which are fantastic -- they
have a solid feel to them and coupled with the knobs (which sorta add to
the old-timey flavor) it reminds me of knobs on my Drake 2B or an old

My #764 wasn't missing anything. I'm left with an extra pile of spare
hardware, so I could have dropped a tiny screw and been OK.
My dual-pots have only slight play. They turn smoothly. I think they

My rig worked fine at first power-up.

I have A Yaesu FT 900 and the knob has a really yucky feel to it. It

Nothing is wrong with the knob that comes on the K2.
Like nothing is wrong with normal wheels that comes on the average car.

I thought they were sharp at first too. I tune either with my left thumb

my forefinger is curved. Helped me throw a wicked slider in my day but

Jerry,
IMHO, the only thing wrong with the stock knob is the sharp edge at the
front perimeter. I tune with my thumb resting on that corner and my thumb
gets sore after a bit. Those fingerdimples may work for some folks, but
since I don't normally tune with a finger, they just get in the way for
comestic or fashion.!?!? for me... both ;-)

I've been asking the same question. It seems there is always quite a bit of
interest in an Elecrfat-produced knob. This is one of those threads that seems
to re-surface every six months or so. What do the Aptos boys say - any
possibility?

What about Elecraft?
If we are so interested in changing the VFO knob (Yes i am also interested
to change that plastic sharp knob with some soft stuff) could Elecraft do
something?

Folks,
The FT-900 rubber ring also fits over the stock K2 knob. The ring was
available a couple months ago even though the knob was out of stock. A bit
wider than the FT-100 ring and priced less too (less than a buck compared to
over $5 for the FT-100 ring).
Of course there are those who still a
