Hi Claude.
Did you tried to use a PS2 mouse and keyboard so you can disable the usb
ports and see if the latency spikes are still there ?
Regards
Alex

Thanks Alex, I haven't tried that yet but I will (unfortunately I threw out
my old PS2 keyboard and mouse a while back).

Having LinuxCNC on my router for 3+ years and Machinekit in my 3d
printer for over a year, I agree to all of John's

Thanks for clarifying that. I'm new to the LinuxCNC world having tried it
about 10 years ago but ending up with MACH3 on my CNC routerand of course
designing the Electronic Lead Screw for my Lathes.
How is Machinekit being used with your 3d Printer? Do you use a separate
slicing program or
in feet on one of my
configs.)

When you use the word beginner I'd say forget all the experimental stuff
and just get a desktop PC. I just purchased this setup and the latency
is really great, usually < 9000 with an occasional 13300.

Well it depends what you want.
The linuxcnc project provides immediate packaged builds of every

AFAIK Octoprint will not work with Machinekit. I use mobaXterm to
connect to BBB via ssh

It may depend on several things. I got an HP 7800 SFF and the latency looked
pretty good, until I started using a custom usb device with it (necessary for
my
setup), and then I started getting realtime errors while running linuxcnc.
Switched to a Dell 745 and have had no such problems.

I apologize for being a bit snarky regarding my experience with the HP7800.
I'm glad to hear Peter and Kirk have had success with this machine because
I'd love to be able to use it!
Have you guys found anything in particular that might cause latency spikes
that I'm seeing? I installed 2.7-Wheezy
What is a good and usable configuration for a machine to drive my beginner
3-axis CNC router?
Is Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone Black an easy solution, or would getting an
old desktop still a more bullet proof (and easy to implement) solution?
Thanks for your time!
