I just keep my finger on the escape key - the most used key in finale
for me anyway. Personally I would find it problematic if it changed
back to the selection tool because how does the appl know if you've
finished doing what you're doing?

Hmm, I spoke too soon. When I created a new file using staves with
GPO4 sounds, the supplied expressions ( mute and open for the brass,
or arco and pizz for the strings,) switched correctly. When I
carefully copied those expressions into my orchestral piece, the arco
and pizz indications

Apparently this is an issue which relates to a small group of scores,
and is not generally applicable. I had the experience and reproduced it
myself before submitting the tech support request, but they could not
reproduce it, and neither could I.
