Hi Phil,
While I'm a relative neophyte to all things *nix, I have had the
experience of wrestling with fink and X11 on my mac for the last week. I
do recall that the faq mentions you should touch .Xauthority in your home
directory, also, make sure that you have your shell set up appropriately

Alexander,
I just wanted to add that the libpng problem mentioned in the FAQ can
affect not only users with the unstable tree enabled. I am presently not
using unstable, but I used to get these warnings, which appeared to be
harmless though.
The fact is that after a recent update I ended up with th
I didn't know that it also affected stable. I'll modify the FAQ
accordingly.
KDE in unstable has been fixed, and is due to be moved over shortly.
Similarly, sawfish in unstable has been switched.
Dave Morrison has a package to check this out, but he is holding off on
releasing it until the newe
Thanks for the prompt reply.
Actually I usually run windowmaker and only use gnome+sawfish from time to
time.
Moreover I think in my case the problem is a minor one. Even in gnome
everything seems to work fine apart from the missing background.
So I'll try to figure out what needs to be rebuilt.

I think it's in control-center.

Thanks,
after reinstalling control-center and its split-offs the desktop
background is back.
I will recapitulate what happened in case someone else encounters similar
problems.
I was experiencing the libpng problem reported in the FAQ's despite the
fact that I do not have the unstable tree enable
Can someone explain this. Thanks

Folks,
Followup to my gnome questions of yesterday.
My initial problem was that, in using blackbox, I revised my .xinitrc
file to read
exec blackbox
and XDarwin then started up fine in blackbox. So I then revised my
.xinitrc file to read:
# exec blackbox
exec gnome-session
so XDarwin would
