[Fink-users] How to install things?

Patience please for some newbie queries. Within Gnome, what is the best method of downloading programs and then installing them so that they appear within the Sawfish desktop? For example, I used dselect to install Dia and it compiled by itself and it's icon appeared for me to use within Sawfish
