With OS X in the Utilities folder, within the Applications folder there is
DISC UTILITY.
Use that to erase it.

pretty easy to mount to just about anything,I had not thought of automotive
use.but may be close to what you are looking for,and not very expensive if

Actually, holding down the T key puts a PowerBook into target disk mode
when connected to another Mac via FireWire. Essentially turning the
PowerBook into an external hard drive.
