So long as the entire IDE cable is under 18 inches, you should be good, IIRC. Some controllers will have problems with cables longer than 18 inches, probably due to signal crosstalk, etc. Just make sure to buy a high-quality cable, as I remember there being some problems with cheap round cables.

learning about hard drives on a G4 sawtooth
