Don't think that your problem is related to the Maps API. It rather
seems to be a general HTML issue.
Even when using valid HTML it's always possible to nest elements in
such a way that no browser is able to render them.

Not using kmlLayer (or the old GGeoXml), no.
They strip allowed lots of content. Mainly to make it harder for
malicious users to insert code into the main Google maps site, or even
your site (if you allow users to paste a url of a KML file)
... but if you trust the KML author (yourself!) and
