I do agree with you that there is a large element of snake oil with power
protection and conditioning but there is also

As a EE myself, I tend to agree with your EE friend. :-)

Three computers here (each with 10 internal SCSI drives)...three APC
SmartUPS 1500 (computer, external drives, monitor for each UPS).
