HostMonitor is nice enough. We never really found it to be 100% effective as sometimes it was give an alert on a server that wasn't down. Eventually I came across Netsaint and then Nagios(what netsaint became) ... Nagios is pretty much perfect. And it's free to boot. Try www.nagios.org.

In regards to the subject line: cheap Not everyone has a good budget to get the programs that have all of the features and eye candy, so they look for alternatives. I work at a very small hospital and doubt I could ever get Solarwinds ($1975 for the Orion SL100 and up to $12,000+ for the SLX)

By Solarwinds, I believe you mean Orion. And Orion is missing about 30-40% of the features of Nagios. Oh yeah and it's a commercial product. I(and some others) manage over 1000 servers in 14 colos with Nagios. Other than writing some plugins to access various game servers, we run a standard

OpManager is nice, but doesn't actually offer anything better than Nagios and doesn't have as many features (and I believe ManageEngine's support prices are pretty stiff even compared to Solarwinds.) Also, at the time we tested management software we found that they only supported APC USPs. I

Oddly I am almost positive that they have since moved on to Nagios. (BB was cool in 1996-97, but Nagios is basically as good as Tivoli and OpenView. None of which have as many Windows features as MOM+SMS, but I still think i can make a Tivoli install for less money than MOM+SMS.) There's a
