The Rollins College Regional Horn Workshop '09 will take place in the Music
Department of Rollins College in Winter Park, FL on March 28, 2009. We are
pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Johnny Pherigo, former IHS President,
to our program. Johnny will demonstrate and

I sure hope the Prof. decides to use Ovonic Amorophis Solar Cells (made in

Ken and listers,
I agree with Hans on the dezinc. issue. Early Yamaha student
instruments had a terrible problem with this, especiall the outer slide of
the student trombones. I have noticed this with other off brand, cheap
student trombones and trumpets.

Sorry, Ken, these "red rot" story is a bit different. It does occur on
unlacquered instruments rarely, but it does occur a lot on lacquered
instruments. Why ? Because many makers, even famous, do not remove the
excess solder by hand (scratching it away; enormous extra costs because

Yes and no, I agree and disagree completely with what everyone has said.
Seriously, if you value your instrument, you should keep it properly
lubricated including the rotors. What you use is not as important as how often

I've seen everything from 2 to 36 mics on symphonic recording sessions.
I've done them in concert halls, ballrooms, small and large studios. The most
realistic sound as to what was going on came from the engineers/producers who
used less mics.

Random thoughts based on this thread:
I couldn't agree with Steve Mumford more. Repair techs who insist that
every tube must be polished are not doing your horn a favor.

If you have very loose slides or play in hot places you may find
motorcycle chain grease suitable. A short squirt from a spray can
produces a foam which spreads out and then "sets" in a film. It's
pretty sticky and doesn't "melt" like slide grease does. And you can

There are only two bearings on rotor valves.? The rotor surfaces do not touch

Thanks Ralph, I'll give the grease a try and let you know how it works.
