Hi,
I believe that the answer depends on major two factors:one is tone quality
and the other is the ease of playing on the other sides of the horn , the Bb
and F.As far as tone quality goes , I like the high Eb better.I think that
the tone color is pretty similar to Bb. As for ease of production
Hello folks, how about the g - g1 - g2 passage in Franz Schuberts Octett
op.166 (I guess) ? And the passage g -e-eh-

sixteenths c--bnat-c-d-c---g using the ascending 3rd of the Bb-horn.
Nobody can beat that faster on a regular doubl
There's precedent for this "supercharge" in other areas of human physical
endeavor as well, e.g., weight lifting. Sometimes lifters will just hold
onto or perhaps do a partial range of motion with a weight that's too heavy
for the full lift, but this will then make the full lift with their normal
Hey, Jay Ray! You have done caught on re: the ascending horn design!
My Alex 102 is an ascending, compensating horn and the answer is "Yes."
The third valve is ascending on both the F and Bb sides. One of the
ways of describing the horn is that it is a quadruple horn in C, Bb, G,
and F, ea

This was fascinating reading. Years ago, due to the boredom of playing
"professionally" in a band that rewarded stagnancy and punished creativity,
I got to thinking of Dennis Brain's ascending C-valve that he ha

The triple horn thread has been interesting. No one has adressed the
advantages/drawbacks of the F Bb Eb triple or the Bb Eb double descant.

If memory serves, how well frequencies "travel" has to do with their size
(wavelength) relative to the obstacles they encounter on their journey. The
longer the wavelength (and therefore the lower the pitch) in relation to the
obstacle, the better it "gets around" whatever might be in its way. Th

As an analogue, consider cordless phones and wireless networking
technology.
Raising the broadcast frequency REALLY ups the "bandwidth," or the
ability
to move the data. However, all other things being equal, the higher

Bill,
I'm sure we'll hear more about this but, as far as what I've observed,
you've got it upside down. It's the low frequency sound waves that carry.
The high frequency waves are both more directional AND much more easily
"damped out" by the surroundings

I think Eng. Schmidt and Hans Hoyer build these horns.
