David, Thank you for responding. We do provide file level backup/restore using TSM running under Z/os. The FDR backups are for volume backups only for DR. Recent problems restoring one of the Linux guests suggests to us that this might not be the best solution hence my questions. Dave O'Brien

I personally would not go this route for the Linux guest, but would probably backup the VM system disk that way. This is why. To me, it makes more sense to make the platform as transparent as possible to the Unix admin, and developers. The other open platforms use a client server based backup to
