A - It's possible to connect Ficon channels directly to SAN switch? Not as FICON. FICON and FCP use the same physical hardware, but format the signals on the glass differently. You would install a FICON physical adapter with the FCP microcode (the only difference is the software in the adapter)

I like having a Standalone VM system backed up on tape so that I can restore to a 'free' volume and ipl that to check out anything. I can get it down to fit on a 3390-m3 so that the backup fits on one 3490 tape. It has helped us in more than one hardware switch and at disaster recovery exercises.
