Did anyone manage to deterse the 180 MB for the latest z/VM 5.4 RSU ?
Mine breaks while complaining insufficient storage, but after a few
experiments I am thinking the file is probably damaged...

Mystery solved. The file that would not DETERSE was indeed corrupt. It
had been transferred to my pc using the DownloadDirector. I used HTTPS
in yet one more trial and that file did pass muster.
