I suddenly had a vision of a crane (the bird kind, not the
construction kind) in flight with a gigantic jet turbine strapped to
it's back. :)

Very well said. What we are releasing on Thursday is the beginning of
something, not the end. Something which I find is very exciting. I
hope you will as well.

By the way, if you are attending SD West, why not swing by the Java
Posse Roundup on your way there (particularly anyone from Europe or
East Coast). You could come and hang out the week before, do some
geeking and skiing, and carry on to SD West for the week after. What's

As you have heard if you have already listened to episode 219, we made
the difficult decision to move the Java Posse Roundup 2009 one week
earlier than we had previously announced. This was because the SD West
conference announced their dates for the same week, and we clashed
with them last year.
No technology on earth is able to accomplish this. :o)

Uh, I just wanted to point out that JavaFX, even 'though it's being
released at a 1.0 is by no means a complete technology, nor is it a
mature technology. Several key parts of JavaFX, including the
much-touted 3D support, have yet to be included, because they weren't
stable enough to go into the 1
My blog called "JavaFX != JavaFX Script" over a year ago, actually,
and some details have changed. (though the core awesomenesss of what
is now called JavaSE 6 update 10 has not changed).
Yes, a week or two ago I did talk about how Swing & Enterprise is
still a focus, and that's still true.

We do have plans to let the scenegraph and media (Java Media Component
or JMC) have Java apis, but we don't have any public details right now
and I can't say when we will. Right now I'm talking about JavaFX.
Binding will never be available from Java because that's a part of the

Thanks for the advice,
Do you use NetBeans for this?
Is there an Eclipse plug-in that gives you the same IDE support?

I was facing a similar problem last year. I had to consume a single
web service and expose just a couple of them. They were vry simple
and I did not want to feed the application with thick jars. It was a
ibm show, which meant java 1.4, spring 2.0 and websphere 5.

I would highly recommend trying Spring web services. It takes care of
all the web service BS and it can work with many different flavors of
services.

Jax-ws is also a standard part of java se 6. It even contains an
embedded http server. No need for any additional libraries.

Speaking for the "standard" side of things:
JAX-WS is part of Java EE 5 and JAX-RS (1.0 shipped recently) is set
to be in EE 6.
Both heavily rely on POJOs and annotations such that, while doing Web Services.

This is Java, you are supposed to adopt frameworks every day.
Kidding aside, have a look at XStream. It is not a framework as much
as a generic serializer facility, which can be used in a REST style
service layer, turning your DTO's int
I also am interested in when a javafx designer will be available.
Also, how exactly do you embed swing controls in a javafx stage now?
The only examples I can find online don't work anymore.
Lastly, will javafx ever have support for things like traits/mixins/
structural subtyping or extension me
I'd like to know more about the bridge between Swing and JavaFX too -
although I'm slightly more concerned about how well node based and MVC/
ui delegate based components will sit together side-by-side. Without
delegates, action maps, input maps etc.. (the feel bits of the L&F)

Hi everybody,
I'm a pretty seasoned Java server side developer and have the need now
to create some web services.
Ideally what I'm looking for is thin utility library to help me do
this - not a whole framework which I would have to adopt.
Recommendations please.
Thanks in advance
