setting to "display surname". and I still had that set to ALL CAPS. (So,
in reality, we don't know whether it worked or not, do we? Maybe they were
never in ALL CAPS?? haha)

below between the equal signs), there was a way to merge old style
sources into the new style sources.
This feature did NOT last every long. Perhaps only in build 55.

Two different things are being compared here. Legacy has never released a
Source Converter, but when Legacy7 was first released it was possible to use
cut and paste to copy data from the old style source to Source Writer, this
optionn was later removed.
