version of the manual? As far as I can see, you use version 2.6
and if I read the manual correctly for that version, you should use

I finally found a way to avoid the collision of the accidentals by
moving the notes in different voices, shifting the notehead and making
the stem invisible in one of the voices and moving the accidental with
tweaking the extra-offset property of the accidental.

According to the number of scores I've read, beaming eights into
4-groups in 4/4 time is an engraving tradition, that's why LilyPond does
the same.

Aha! So the trick is to use \markup.
I try to typeset the word "There's", with a decent apostrophe. This
would lead to
\markup {"There"#(ly:export (ly:wide-char->utf-8 #x2019))"s"}
One hackers solution would be to create a white rectangle using
a text script with \markup{\whiteout{...}} (I haven't thought of the
details). If you are lucky, this rectangle
will be typeset after (i.e. on top of) the hairpin.

lilypond.exe, under Windows XP Pro V2002, SP2.
When I upgraded from 2.8.4.1, and ran convert.ly on my files, I got an
error on the following:

be surprised if you found that they mostly use the same typesetting
practice as LilyPond does. Note that 16th notes and quicker are
split into 4 beams per measure in common time, it's only 8th notes
that are grouped into 2 beams per m

Are you sure that the example worked in version 2.8?
I tried to process the code you sent with 2.8 and got an error message saying
ERROR: Unbound variable: trillflat
so I guess that it's only the error message that has changed.
Another option is that you had a line with something like
