Actually, the problem is that I don't think the drive controller and the
Lisa are talking on a normal basis. Only one or two of the many times I've
tried to boot have been successful in getting any sort of error message.
The rest of the times, the machine acts as if it's a Lisa without a har

The thing is I had allready un-stuck the head motor when I un-stuck the

Hi Phil,
when you opened the PSU, did you before check, whether it's necessary
to solder something inside?
It's very likely, that your PSU still works - and I'm shure it does,
until I see one reason for an error, that it doesn't.
Yes, it's true that sometimes caps dry out and sometimes the surg
Hi Chris,
you wrote about your Widget-Drive - or better Lisa one's :-)
It repeatedly gave the same error if I hit continue, but the next
power cycle, it just hangs at the hourglass screen for a while and
then asks to insert a floppy (appears if no HD is present again).
Yes, thats right. The B
After the drive spins up, you hear the clack of the brake, and then the head
starts seeking around, right? It should be seeking around a lot, not just a
blip ever second.
When I got my Lisa, its Widges was non functional. When I powered it up the
drive would spin up, but it would just sit ther
I've got an update regarding the problem with my Lisa's Widget. It
appears that if the drive is disconnected, the system will go straight to
the boot process, but when connected, the system hangs at the rectangular
screen with the hourglass for some time before it attempts to boot from the
I do not have the plan for the 1.8 amp PSU.
I did have the plans for the 1.2 amp, if I can't find it on my computer,
I'll download it again.
The plans for the 1.8A are not available on the internet as a PDF.
VintageMicros was selling ones they had made on ebay a while ago. I picked

Much thanks,
I'll see if I can't track this book down.
I just opened up an old broken 1.2amp supply to have a good look
inside. Not really sure what is what however.
If I can't find the book, would anyone know where the caps that need
to be replaced are located? (C-?)

My 2 cents worth again. How about doing a low level fromatting of these
old drives on a pee cee mfm controller ? Finding a peecee mfm controller
may be hard these days. In my sea of ibm stuff I may have a mfm I/F card
and software. Its worth a try. I had 3 working mfm drives until 2 weeks

Phil,
I forgot to mention the following book:

There is a big Lisa section inside this book- the removal procedure of
electrolytic caps is very good illustrated with many pictures.

Hi Phil,
you don't have to replace all caps- only the electrolytic caps and the
"transparent" , sometimes white or yellowish power surge protector
(interference suppression) caps - I had several "explosions and ugly smell"
with these power surge protector caps.

If anyone is replacing the capacitors in the PSU, would they be able
to document the process with photos and a descriptions. I would be
more than willing to host the instructions on my .Mac account.

e...ok!
it sounds like performing a low level format needs some special
equipment that I'm not likely to have. If it can't be done on a Mac

One other thing I have noticed is an error 10100 next to what I guess

Hello Phil,
error 85 means: you have reached the hard disk time-out limit... the hard
disk hasn't answered within a given time- probably the system track, boot
secor is bad . You need a fresh low level format.- or a new drive if the
number of bad blocks exceeds 30 counts.
