Hello Peter, Julius,
Thanks for your inputs.
Actually, I'm doing some in-house experiments on server fine-tuning
using the most commonly available software components (KDE,
OpenOfficeOrg) hoping to get some useful data which may help in
scaling up an LTSP server.
I'm currently looking at RAM /
John,
Did you build your own kernel ?
If you did, i'd say you forgot to copy the kernel modules to the
/opt/ltsp/i386/lib/modules directory.

Hi All, I've setup LTSP using dhcp on ports 1001/1002 according to the
instructions at http://www.ltsp.org/contrib/parallel_dhcp.txt, and
everything works fine, except I get the following error at boot time:

Run gdmconfig as root. Under the 'login behaviour' tab, make sure that
'Show the system menu' is not checked. I think that does it...

Olav,
I don't remember from your first posts, is the server locking up or actually
crashing in a kernel panic?
I have used top running once a minute from cron to help tracking down intermittent
crashes in the past. A line like:

Dirk,
There are indeed off the website, but you can still get
to the files at:

Hi,
The first errors (the 404 ones) are because gentoo (hosted on ibiblio) is
not (yet) mirroring the files needed for ltsp (the ebuild isn't even in
portage yet). Don't worry about those, it's perfectly normal.
The other error, it seems, is that the file was downloaded wrong. I have
computed
Hi,
Are the 2.x packages (xservers, core, various kernels for NICs) gone
from LTSP.org´s download page or am I just too blind to see them?
If they are: do any mirrors exist?

Michael,
It just happens that I had a comparable problem this morning. Did you
check the /etc/exports file? The lines for LTSP should also point to

Philip,
the behavior you describe is exactly right. the system *should*
use as much memory as possible for buffer cache. this memory is released
for use as needed. why would you want to have tons of memory doing
nothing? julius

Linda,
There is a lot more to a full disaster recovery plan then I could possibly write in
an email.
In a nutshell I:
1) Rsync the main server to the hot backup daily
2) Do a full weekly backup to tape using bru
3) Do a daily incremental backup to tape

I would think about upgrading you clients to 100mbit ethernet cards.
While 10mbit is still pretty quick, that will be your bottleneck. The
gigabit card on your server should do just fine, without ever becomming
a bottleneck, except in that it'll be waiting to deliver data to your
workstations.

After the emerge phase I get another error:

Dennis,
How are you measuring this ?
In Linux, I don't think there is much of a choice. If 2 users
launch the same app, using the same shared libs, they are going
to occupy only one place in memory.
But, with any app, there is still going to be private space that
isn't going to be shared.
Lik
Survey) Any software that runs under Linux can run under LTSP.
1) You will need to load a USB module. The example in the LTSP docs (for using a USB
printer on a ThinkNIC) shows
adding "MODULE_01 = usb-ohci" to the ltp.conf. There are two types of USB. Which one
you use depends on your hardware.
Philip,
No need to worry about freeing this memory; the kernel does it automatically. The
kernel will raise or lower the amount of memory used for cache depending upon the
amount needed by running applications. Lots of memory used for cache is normally a good
sign because it means you have ple
Just interested in how shared memory under linux affect's memory usage.
Interestingly, when 2 clients start open office, it appears not to
share memory but rather have 2 seperate instances. Is open office is
suitable office package for LTSP or are the memory requirements to high?
Thanks

Thanks, Duane... this is a good reference. I had all the winbind related
stuff working per this faq... the problem was with xdm. The pam.d
service file for xdm doesn't tie into system-auth..
Hi everyone,
Is there a way we can recover server RAM, especially cached RAM?
I've been observing memory usage using
KDE's Control Center->Information->Memory utility and noticed that
in my setup, cached RAM amounts to a big value.
I noticed also that RAM cache usage increases when my backup
