We are getting ready to roll out an LTSP installation for use as
internet/openoffice workstations at a local non-profit. It will have
both regular users and guest accounts.

Is there a reason that you're using OpenSuse? If you are able to, Ubuntu is
worth trying at least in a test environment to see if it will possibly
better suit your needs.
Of course you could try debian or another distro that supports ltsp.
