Hi.. how do I get a long equation in a display environment to split
itself into two lines or more as necessary.. attached is a lyx file with
one such long equation that I'd like to have split.. I tried \sloppy in
the preamble but it doesn't work.. probably cos the equation is in the
display mode?

You have to do that manually. TeX does not offer that feature (IIRC
because Knuth himself considered it too difficult

it is bizarre, you can't seem to have the letter s first and doubled in the
slide title!
If you change the slide title to something without the ss or SS at the front it
works!
As a quick and dirty fix, just insert a

Unfortunately I am doing this in prosper and it comes up fine just far
too big so you only see a small proportion of it. As I have never used
ERT before I have no idea how to change the size. I have attached a

Unfortunately I am doing this in prosper and it comes up fine just far
too big so you only see a small proportion of it. As I have never used
ERT before I have no idea how to change the size. I have attached a
simple test file.
Any help very much appreciated.

Is there any way to change the font size in lyx with prosper. I have
tried layout-character then smaller but it doesn't seem to do anything.
This is in a theorem and proof slide if that makes any difference.

I'm not sure why you resorted to the article class.. the CV class
included with LyX can produce something very similar.. I created mine
using the CV class.. it's at:
