Hi John, If that doesn't work, you can try Sarah's suggestion of booting to the recovery partition. This is a hidden partition that Apple now places on your hard drive that works as a replacement for the startup DVD. You can boot into the Recovery partition by holding down the Command+r keys

Hi there yeh all was set up by me and Heather who has full sight. after we installed updates from the apple store it said the computer needs to be restarted so we correctly shut down and now I cannot get it back on. it is from laptopsdirect in Huddersfield in the uk. thanks. At 18:29 07/07/2013

To reset the PRAM, you have to hold down Command, Option, p and r, then press the Power key and keep holding down the four keys until you hear the chime four times. Release the four keys and the machine will boot normally. Also, having done updates, it's a good idea to repair permissions. Cheer
