We had a spare oil pump shaft and used a 1/2" drive drill motor to
pre-oil the engine. Cranking with the glow plugs out until oil pours
off the camshaft drip tube will work, too.
It won't start right up anyway, you have to bleed out the air in the
injection lines, so this isn't all that much
I believe it is a large, full flow filter rather than the bypass
filter. It's intended to catch all the loose grit and dirt left in the
engine during manufacture that the oil washes loose. The older 617
uses a mesh screen as the full-flow filter, and it's probably not fine
enough to catch all
Since the air intake is essentially wide open on a diesel (vac
governors excluded, but have the same effect), something has to control
engine speed.
The governor "combines" the engine speed with the accelerator position

I think if you use a good assembly lube you don't really need to

Thanks to listers Royce Engler, Peter Frederick, and Glenn Brown (and
others, if I missed any) for advice on my intermittent heat problem in
my 300D.
I ordered a monovalve insert from Rusty and installed it today,
problem solved. My heat is working flawlessly now.
