The owners manual has a chart like they all do. Theres no 5w40 listed but 10w40
is listed for all the temp ranges I'm likely to run at... Its a Japanese bike
remeber and 10w40 has been the standard in those for years...

I am betting on the gummed up or kickdown cable unplugged.
The problem is in the valve body either way, if you can not get it to work
with a bit of driving, drop pan and swap valve body.

There was a warning a few years ago about the additives needed to make the
oil perform as stated at 10 and 40 - they said the gap was too wide and the
additives needed too great - is that not a problem with MCs?

The issue with Dino oil based 10W 40 is that the additive package causes
coking in the rings and the issue will be worse in an air cooled engine like
one in an air cooled MC. But Mobil 1 does not have these issues because the
base stock does not need as much additives to work the same.
Thanks,
Can I pull the valve body out of the old tranny and put it in this one?
How hard is it to pull the valve body? Im guessing a hell of a lot
easier than pulling the whole tranny. Kickdown cable unplugged? You
mean the wire to the kickdown solenoid? I have it unplugged right now,

About 10 minutes more than changing the oil.

Well, you all recall the 140 all the sudden blowing huge amounts of
smoke. Suspected turbo. Well, I started tearing into it today. Yep,
its the turbo. There is alot of oil in the turbo area. Even see a a
little bit seeping thru the joints of the back housing, and turbo to
exhaust manifold.
The cable is fine as near as I can tell, though it is different at the
top end than the one out of the diesel. The diesel one is round on the
end, fits in a round hole and is held in with a c clip. The one on the
2.6 and other gas cars is simply a square plastic piece that slides and

The annual occasional NE MB chowdah fest was a star event today. We enjoyed
clearing and finally sunny weather (but our thoughts are with those of you
in Texas who are suffering from IKE). We had 9 humans and 6 MB's, great
food, hood popping, parts swapping, and enjoyable story telling.
Footage at 11. Curt will work on that when he gets home.

As others mentioned dropping valve body is about 10 more minutes than
dropping pan. I am not 100% sure on your transmission but on the 724.x there
is a metal plate on top of valve body that keeps all the pieces in place
thus removing valve body is simple. I would recommend trying it on a
Hmmm, is that 602 cable like the 603? All the way out when the
throttle is closed, goes back into the housing as the throttle
opens? Backwards from the gassers.

It is -- but it has this really sweet-whistling turbo tucked down there in

Well if I have to pull the valve body, I will be swapping it for the one
in the tranny that came out of the car. So, I guess the tranny would be
upside down, or on its side while pulling the pan and valve body. Is
this one of those deals where it has to drop straight down otherwise
stuff
Every one I have seen its loose at closed throttle, and tightens at
full. Now I t hink the adjustment is backwards but the actual working
is the same.
The modulator and vacuum stuff wouldnt have anything to do with it not
upshifting would it? Would not think so. I did swap the diesel

This was a known problem in the 80s and was first discovered when engine

problem was not brand specific. Also, the same engines that ran 10W 30 or

On the 603 in a W124, the cable is full OUT at closed throttle,
retracts fully into the housing at full throttle, the reverse of
the gassers, which are all the way into the housing at closed
throttle and all the way out at full throttle.
However, I still agree you have a valve body problem,
A few years ago, there were no 10W-40 oils on the Mercedes approved
list. 10W-30 and 15W-50 Mobil 1, yes, but not the 10W-40.
I would assume that the viscosity exenders were at fault, and that MB
felt that inadequate lubricating qualities would result.
