I drove a 5 speed diesel Hyundai Atos in France. Fuel economy was over 50
mpg equivalent.

But the old Rabbit diesel had about 40HP (when new) or so?

How big is the engine?
A 1.4L Cruze runs about .25-.28 gallons per hour, or
You don't think the MB engineers took the extra starting cycles into
account when they spec'd out the starter? I do.

The service rep at the dealership said there is a separate battery in the
Bluetec models that handles this feature ("Ecostart"), so the main battery
is unaffected. Not sure how all this extra work affects (degrades) the
starter...

That was kind of my thought, but with engine management controls the way they
are nowadays I would think it might be minimal compared to the “good ‘ol days”
of carburetion.

Wouldn't you also expect emissions to be higher immediately upon start
up than they are once the engine has run for a bit?

Of course, that term is a bit of a misnomer. Idling? Really?
Let's see what it is still doing while 'idling':
Recharging the battery
Running the AC, and/or the heat
Running the lights
Running the interior
We had a rental car a couple of years ago that had the auto stop and
start feature. It was a Chevy Malibu if my memory serves to be correct.
It was actually very seamless. I didn't realize it was doing it for a
time. Stop at a light and the motor would shut off. Lift your foot off
the brake

The government passing laws to help.

For something like the Prius (?) this technology makes some sense. The
starter/motor is
large, and direct drive. (No gears.) Very little to wear, in other words, and

When the 2016 Chevy Cruze obtained start-stop technology, it came with a
beefed-up starter and a large AGM battery, along with smart charging and
a current sensor in the battery cable so the car knows amp-hours in vs
amp-hours out. Certain temperature parameters must be met, climate
control
I suspect that the emissions are harder to limit when the engine is idling,
so that's why they shut off - not to save gas.

Not that I've ever heard.
Wife's car has that stop/start and it has a standard-looking 12v lead/acid
battery.
I hate it too. I always disable it when I'm driving. Can't see how the pennies
in gas it might save offsets all the extra wear on the starter.

I know nothing of these setups, other than to say that I had a BMW 3 series as
a rental this past weekend that had that infernal “shut off the engine at every
stop” feature which I was able to disable, thank goodness.
