The 85 W123 in California had the Trap Oxidizer. The 49 state cars
did not, although it's possible a few did. Some had the new style
injection pumps too, in both places, but this is by chassis number,
not by year.

If he runs the ENGINE VIN he will realize that the campaign was consummated
in the 90s, in VA.
So if the car shipped without a T/O,

My thoughts exactly. Unless there was something unusual about the engine I
can't imagine them going to the trouble of trying to read the engine serial
number. If it's like the M119 it's pretty much impossible to get to in frame.

Isn't the engine s/n stamped on the block below the head at the rear of the
engine (I could be thinking of the M117)? They're more likely to look for
the engine s/n by cross referencing to the chassis s/n.

I would agree with this as well. If you gave them a different VIN they would
immediately begin suspecting something fishy, I would think.

True, but it's an easy "out" for the dealer to avoid having to do campaign or
warranty work, which is about the least profitable job in the shop.
Not to mention that they can get stuck with the job if the claim gets denied by
MBUSA. If there is anything in the past that shows the numbers don't
why would you give them a VIN that's different than the one they can see
on the chassis? that would seem to invite questions... i'd have them
check the one on the car, not the motor, especially if you don't know if
either was ever part of the Campaign.
cheers!

I would. Most o the engine serial numbers are pretty tough to get to. Feign
ignorance. What's the worst thing that could happen?

It would be hard to damage the turbo internals in an engine swap unless
