Yes, but they seldom need replaced. There is a gasket at the intake
where the crossover pipe hooks to it. I seldom replace that one, but
if you want no oil leakage, you should replace it or seal it with a
thin layer of silicone ( I use permatex blue)

Only if you try to do it with the intake manifold on. Book procedure
is to take off the manifold and put in a new $10 gasket. Many of us
change em with the manifold on. Pretty much the same glow plug as an
OM 616 or 617. Bosch
You get the risk of head cracking and rod bending. Do you have a spare head
stored away?

Yes, carbon is part of the issue. Toward the end of the glow plug body
there is a shoulder. This shoulder is supposed to form a seal against the
head to prevent carbon build-up between body and head. I've now filled all
that space up with anti-seize.
The other part is simple galvanic
Next time they will practically unscrew themselves, now that
anti-seize coats then. Probably a three or four hour job.
Wasn't your biggest problem carbon build-up?
Nothing's going to make that better...

Using a torque limit of 45 Nm, two more are done. Only #3, #5 remain.
#3 is blocked by the aneroid capsule on top of the injection pump. The Hazet
swivel socket has allowed me to get that one working back and forth a bit.
#5 is blocked by the oil filter housing, same location as an OM603

The Beru literature says for a stuck plug, apply 12v for 3 minutes to heat
it up. I tried that on one
You are wasting your time with the oil in the
Injector holes. On the stuck one try tightening it a bit then loose, work it
back and forth.

filament was broken, it measured good. I decided to try twisting it a
little to see how badly it was broken, and now it refuses to move again.

I've read too many posts on PeachParts about dealers and independent
mechanics breaking them off, and then not having the correct Klann or MB or
Laser special tool kit to extract the remains without removing the head.
Please ask your indie what his plan will be for extracting a broken plug.
All of these things referenced in these posts is precisely why I am
renewing mine with my checkbook.

I resorted to using compression engine GP removal once. On a OM615 with a
carbon plug at the inside end that would not let go of the item. Just spun and
spun. I built a wooden cage around the GP (2x4), drove it up a hill and it

I like this instruction set better. No need to remove engine from car and
no need for a welder.
I reckon that's an "if all goes well" estimate. On the other hand, I'm
getting some other stuff done too so it's probably coming out in the wash.
