I could tell the difference in the SDL. I used the thin oil in the
winter. (5w-40)M1 and the 15W-50 in the warmer weather. oil pressure
was lower at idle, oil consumption went up with the thin stuff, but it
started easier at -20ºF.

Wait, we're (or at least I'm) being specific here though, was it a modern
synthetic oil? Specifically are we comparing 5w40 vs 15w50?
Its easy to say light oil won't do whatever but I'm specifically saying in most
conditions you probably won't see any difference using M1 5w40 vs M1 15w50 in

Well, the long haul guys say that fleets use it, and if you buy a used
fleet truck, to avoid the rotella, as it works well enough for the half
million or so miles the fleet will put on the truck, but you will pay
for a major. If you buy from a fleet that used delo or delvac, the

It's enough that a thinner oil couldn't be kept cool enough by the oil
cooler to keep the idle pressure above .3 bar in the OM615 we had - '70

Also remembering that most of us don't run the engine at 100% output very much,

Does the engine temp rise appreciably with higher ambient temp? The engine is
already closing in on 200F, especially in the moving bits...
Didn't Mercedes say anything above 1 bar of pressure at idle was acceptable?

I agree. The inside of your engine is going to be way more hot than the outside
temp so the theory of needing thicker oil in hotter temps is false.

When the ambient temps are at and above 100F, a lighter than 50 weight oil
would not keep the oil pressure up at idle when the engine was fully warmed
up. 15W-50 synthetic was great in the OM61x and OM60x engines I had. So, if
the temps get high, you need heavier oil. If the temps get low, you need
In a 61x engine 0w40 is hard to keep IN the engine. At least it was in my '83
240D. That car leaked 5x as bad with 0w40. It started more easily but was
costing me an extra quart of oil a week to keep going. 5w40 leaked way less and
started nearly as well.
I'd say 5w40 is the sweet spot, espec
What about Rotella T6? The gen3 TDI guys are all about Rotella T6. I was
thinking about it for the ASV since that wants 3 gallons of oil and I can get
T6 in 5 gallon pails for way cheaper than M1.
Actually I ought to ask the local Deere dealership what they want for a bucket
of their synthetic.

M1 15W-50 is still best for summer and moderate winter temps. (OM
601,2,3) and still good for OM61x, although the soot levels dictate more
frequent oil changes, so, IMHO make OM61x not worth the price of
synthetic. I'd guess about 0º. Below 0, you probably need a garage, a

Oops yes M1 15w50 is what I meant. Sorry for the typo.
20w50 probably came to mind as I used to run Castrol 20w50 in my

I don't think I've ever seen M1 20w50... I forget where you are but if the

Wow an oil thread.
What are people using in the older diesels, e.g. OM617?
Years ago (Marshall Booth era) I used to use M1 20W50. I later got the

using Delo and changing more often.

I'm not sure I 100% believe it. My 2010 Dodge RAM certainly doesn't do as well
with Valvoline as it does with M1. Around 5,000 miles the engine starts to tick
on startup, change the oil, tick goes away. With M1 tick goes away and stays
away. 8,000 miles in now on M1, no tick.
