On a side note, Sunday night seems to be an ideal time to stop and
listen for birds along Hwy 65, since the traffic was extremely light
(only 3 cars in one hour).

In what was supposed to be a quick scouting trip to check the flooding status
at Crosby Farm (in advance of a birding class I'm leading on Tuesday), I ended
up spending an action packed hour watching new migrants.
I arrived just after this morning's thunderstorms ended and was quickly treated

Gopi Sundar, Swatti Kittur, and I braved the cold, wind, and snow flurries to
search for migrants today. Bird activity was way better than the weather would
indicate, including 9 warbler species. Highlights below:

in Hastings was very productive (mostly at the aerated pond) where we saw a
Great Egret (a bit early?), Great Blue Heron, Pied-billed Grebe, Scaup,
Ring-necks, and a flock of Ring-billed Gulls.

Kaposia landing, South St. Paul - mostly the same waterfowl as before, plus
several Hooded Mergansers, 3 Great Blue Herons, and a semi-aquatic turkey
walking on the ice near the water's edge.
We ended up with 29 species for 6+ hours of searching... It was a beautiful
day to be out!

winter gulls. If you go, please be careful of the construction truck traffic
and railroad crossing both directly underneath the 494 bridge.

Rusty Blackbird, a late
Golden-crowned Kinglet, and a fly-over group of ~80 Snow Buntings.
It was a good day for waterfowl in the area as a total of 22 species of
ducks/geese/swans were found. The only common ducks not seen were
Blue-winged Teal, Greater Scaup, and Common Merganser.

this bird was blown in from
the west coast? Or has anyone else had experience seeing minima cacklers in
Minnesota?
Other waterfowl on the lake included Gadwall, Shoveler and Ruddy Duck. I also
flushed a Woodcock out of a brushy area along the lakeshore while I was
scanning the goose flock.

included 3 Great Blue Herons at Rebecca Lake Park in
Hastings, and Grackles and Killdeer in the fields around Hastings. Horned
Larks were singing as well. A reminder that we are still in winter was a
Northern Shrike seen at the intersection of 220th street and Orlando Ave.

one point, but the Varied Thrush was by itself when it was feeding.

/2 mile north of the Blue Spruce Rd feeding
station. We also saw a Black-backed Woodpecker NE of the intersection of
Cranberry Road and Sax Rd (Cty Hwy 28). Overall, raptors of any sort (except
Bald Eagles) were noticeably absent from the bog during our visits.
