White-fronted Geese on 430th off CR 1 near Aitkin. This is the same rice paddy

the lakeshore near Nord Lake today then flew nearby and stayed calling

Yellow Rails were very vocal and common in McGregor Marsh at 12:30 AM
yesterday. At each stop we made, one or more rails could be heard.
Earlier just south of here on 380 Lane Yellow Rails were also present.
Sedge Wrens were abundant, no Nelson's Sparrows were noted.

On my way home this afternoon I found a Great Gray Owl hunting along the road
north of Tamarack in eastern Aitkin County.
I drove along Aitkin CR 18 north of Palisade on Tuesday, but didn’t see any
owls. There were 2 Magpies, a Sharp-tailed Grouse, Rough-legged Hawk, Northern
Shrike and a Pheas
Take Aitkin County Road 5 south out of Palisade for 3 miles then turn right on
450th St for
3 miles then turn left on 330th Ave South and the owl was first seen on the
telephone poles
on the east side of road. It then flew west over 330th Ave S and landed on the
roof of a
green shed located on

for the Snowy Owl.
Go south out of Palisade, Mn. on County Rd 5. At the Jct of
Cty Rd 5 & 470th St. turn right (west) and follow for approx
1 mile. At the Jct of 470th St and 310th Ave. turn left (south)
and follow for approx 1.2 miles. The owl

This afternoon north of Tamarack in eastern Aitkin County there was a Northern
Hawk Owl on CR 6. There also had been one in the same spot on the 18th and 19th
but had not been seen since. A few poles over there was an American Kestrel,
also seen today were Northern Harrier, Canada Goose and Dar

South of McGregor along Highway 65. The birds were singing on the East and

Around noon today found a Great Gray Owl north of County Road 18 on 320th Place
just south of the snowmobile crossing. The bird flew up from the ditch onto a
telephone pole. Also, saw a Black-billed Magpie fly across Cty.18 near 282nd

This evening, I checked out Aitkin C.R.1 again. About 9 miles north of
the intersection, I found a NORTHERN SHRIKE. Right at dark, near the
junction of C.R.1 and C.R.22, there were about 1000 CANADA GEESE, 50
CACKLING GEESE and a ROSS' GOOSE. Behind the geese, about half way out
into the field
This afternoon, Steve and Jo Blanich and I birded along C.R.1 north of
Aitkin. Just to the east of the junction of C.R.1 and C.R.22, we had
over 500 SANDHILL CRANES and several big flocks of LAPLAND LONGSPURS (an

Question of the day: what do you get when you put a dead deer in a
field, add 4 BALD EAGLES, 20+ TURKEY VULTURES, 12 RAVENS and 5
BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES. Answer: a very quick snack. This was the scenario
out on C.R. 15 west of Aitkin yesterday. The entire deer was gone in
about an hour -- meat, f
There are still up to 22 GREATER EGRETS hanging around on C.R. 15 west
of town. Yesterday, while watching the egrets, a PEREGRINE FALCON flew
in and caught one of the egrets by the tail feathers. A couple of moves
and the egret was freed but very vocal and upset, having lost a few
feathers. The
I checked County Road 15 this morning and there are now 20 GREAT EGRETS
feeding in the flooded area south of the road. I also counted 26
SANDHILL CRANES, 9 BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES, dozens of GREAT BLUE HERONS and
a flock of about 30 shorebirds (mostly YELLOWLEGS and PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS). This are
Three days ago, we counted around 1500 shorebirds on CR 15 west of
Aitkin. This evening, there are just about zero -- this might be because
of the PEREGRINE FALCON that was sitting in the middle of the mud flats.

area to find them is on CR 15 west of town. To get there, go through

on the 10th telephone pole East of Aitkin CR 22, on CR 1.

Field Trip Report
Enjoyed an extended birding trip, with a MRVAC group over the last few days.
Rain shortened, one of our days. But over all the weather was very good. As
noted in previous posts the insects are o
I decided to bird the McGregor marsh very early this morning and bird Aitkin
County for some time in the morning. I observed 100 species by 11 am. Here
are a few highlights:
Nelson's Sparrow - 1 bird singing on the west side of Hwy 65, between .1 &
.2 mile S of 210 around 4 am; it was far off th
In preparation for next week's MOU field trip, Nate & I ran our Aitkin route
yesterday. Highlights included:
* 13 shorebird species (4th street southwest from Aitkin, flooded fields a a
few miles down the highway (sorry, forgot number), also sod farms on Highway
1) - included Black-bellied Pl
Our MOU Aitkin Field Trip is Saturday June 11th, beginning at 7:15 in the
Rice Lake Refuge (off highway 65) parking lot.

This afternoon we drove up to check out the Tundra Swan site that Betsy
Beneke reported in Kanabec County - nothing there, water frozen. So we
revised our Aitkin County route to check out CR56 where we had seen swans in
past years. No swans, but it was the start of what turned out to be a
raptor
I just talked to my friends at Gun Lake. Their YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER has
made it through the winter. Not only that, but there is another
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER that just showed up along with it -- a brightly
colored male. Early migrant? Their BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES seem to be

Butch Ukura and I birded around Aitkin County this afternoon and found
several interesting things. We found 3 GREAT GRAY OWLS along Aitkin

and 8/10 miles
This morning I birded north of Aitkin along County Road 1 and found a
female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER working on some tamaracks on the west
side of the road about 7 & 3/10 miles north of the diversion ditch
bridge. There were also about a dozen PINE GROSBEAKS in the same area.
Also along C.R. 1
In the last four days, I have had a NORTHERN SHRIKE, an immature
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK and an adult COOPER'S HAWK at my feeders. For the
most part, they seem to go after the House Sparrows -- there is a good
reason to keep feeding the sparrows! They still have to catch about
fifteen more to wipe t

morning. Could not stop to check trail (or I'd still be there!).

away the best location was the snowmobile trail on CR 18.
No evidence of crossbill
Last Monday evening, 28 June, a Great Gray Owl and Yellow Rails were
relocated in Aitkin Co. The Great Gray was hunting just before sunset
along the snowmobile trail/2-track road about 3/4 mile S of CR 18,
where there were earlier sightings this month. This trail/road (which
we walked; it m
Reminder: the MOU Aitkin County trip meets this Saturday (6/19), 7:30 AM,
at Rice Lake Refuge on Highway 65 just south of McGregor. We will park in
the lot, carpool north to CR 18, then return to the refuge late morning to
bird there.
Highway 18 has been spectacular (Great Gray, Northern Haw
Barb and I were completely surprised that on Saturday night with thunderstorms
all around (we could see lighting) that the Yellow Rails in the McGregor marsh
were calling like crazy all around the trail crossing. So many times with just

Last night I did my second woodcock survey and found 2 WHIP-POOR-WILLS
calling north of Palisade. From Palisade, take County Road 10 northeast

on C.R.10, on the river side. The second one is on 280th Avenue, 4/10ths

I did some birding this last weekend with the Bee-Nay-She bird club on
Saturday morning and with Bill Stauffer Saturday afternoon and on
Sunday. I wound up with a total of 90 species. Some of the highlights

I took a short ride out on Aitkin Couty Road 15 west of town this
evening and found a few interesting things. Probably the most
interesting were NINETEEN BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES in one flock about three
and a half miles west of the junction of Minnesota Avenue North and 4th
St N.W. Also seen: two
This afternoon I saw two Buff-breasted Sandpipers with a large flock
of Killdeer along Aitkin County Road 1, 0.9 mile north of CR 55.
There was also a Western Kingbird at the dead end of CR 55, 0.7 mile
northeast of CR 1. This area is about 4 miles north of the town of
Aitkin.

Nate & I will be leading the MOU Aitkin trip on Saturday 6/13, running from
7:30 to about 5:00 (optional afternoon portion).
Certainly there are areas that must be covered - Rice Lake Refuge, CR 18 & 5
at the very least. CR 1 also makes some sense.
But then there are multitudinous options.
On Tuesday May 26th Susan Schumacher and I enjoyed observing a Great Gray Owl
along Aitkin CR 18. From its intersection with CR 5 we went west on CR 18, 2.2
miles and the GGOW flew into a tree on the north side relatively close to the
road. We shut off our engine and watched it hunt from 6:15p
Had great looks today at a semipalmated plover foraging along a
logging road that runs north from Aitkin County Road 18 through
Willowsippi WMA. I had bobolinks at several locations along County
Road 18.
Other notable birds: blue-headed vireo, golden-winged warbler, LeConte's sparrow

Hi Folks,
Great looks today at 2 male bobolinks off County Road 18 in Aitkin
County about 3.5 miles west of County Road 5. Also, on Willowsippi WMA
(County Road 18 at County Road 5) there are LeConte's sparrows and
many more great open-brushland birds.

Driving back from Brainerd this afternoon, saw 1 male and 3 hen hooded
mergansers in a flooded ditch along Hwy 169 south of Aitkin County
Road 18 and 1 mallard drake. Also took note of 2 kestrels and a small
flock of red-winged blackbirds. Pretty sure a bird coarsing over a
field but somewhat far f
It's been fun following the recent reports of Boreal Owls in Northeastern
Minnesota. We want to include Aitkin County in the roster of locations where
Boreal Owls are appearing. It's always a bit frustrating to find out about a
bird well after it is gone...but it's just as interesting to note it
