The Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge is hosting a "Wildlife Festival" from

It will have kid-friendly exhibits, a nature store/gift shop and food trucks.
This is near Zimmerman and Princeton.
Of special interest to birders, almost all interior gravel roads
The popular Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive is open for the season. There still
are a few soft sections (especially around the wetland at Milepost 3) so do
take some care.Eastern Meadowlarks have been seen and heard in the general
area along with many Trumpeter Swans and Greater Sandhill
Refuge staff estimates there are 5,478 cranes staging on the refuge right now.
They are refueling for the final migration flight in a few weeks.
Viewing Opportunities:

The annual "Wildlife Festival" at Sherburne NWR has been deferred again this
year. But there are two silver linings:
* Many of the gates that are normally closed will be open from 8 am to
3pm. This is miles and miles of back country gravel roads seldom seen by the

Just a quick update before the long holiday weekend...
Several people have emailed, or stopped by, to say they've seen the Henslow's

Conditions weren't optimum (wind), but time is growing short to finish up

Hi All,
Our long-time Bird Tour leader is pursuing other interests, and I'm looking
for people who might be willing to lead a bird tour or two this spring, summer
or fall here at Sherburne. Currently, we have a trip scheduled for May 12, as
part of our International Migratory Bird Day
Sherburne Refuge's 2012 Event Schedule has been posted to our web site. You

The bird feeder at our HQ/Office has been busy today! There are at least 2 and

Hi All--
Erika and I enjoyed a marvelous Friday drive to Sherburne NWR. While we
did not see all 5352 cranes counted by refuge personnel, we did see several
hundred. We were surprised that we could get fairly close to the birds
(although, when viewing cranes, we remained in the car).
At the St. Francis Pool at Sherburne NWR I found Black-bellied Plovers, Am.
Golden Plovers Buff-breasted Sandpipers this morning. There were a few other
shorebirds as well. The gate to the area will be locked at 3PM.
