NOT true. Many ISA internals will work (especially those w/jumpers). Some, though
few PCIs will work also. the only real requirement is

modules_install DOES install the modules...
With what you've done, Linux is booting the old kernel but attempting to use
the new modules. This is why things are not working.
You'll need to copy the appropriate files to the right
Boot from your Linux boot disk, Login as root, goto /boot/grub/menu.lst and
do a ./install.sh
This will get things going.
