But externat hardware controlled serial port modems don't cost a busting
fortune why not treat yourself to one and they work well in both
linux/windblows.

Last time I bought some a couple of years ago I bought at £28 each
I wouldn't be without them. They leave winmodems standing.

See http://www.winmodem.org/ and look up your modem. Some work quite
well, some are flakey, and some don't work at all.

You can get HCF/HST modem drivers source code and compile the drivers as
per your system. On Sourceforge.net, there is a set of three drivers
precompiled that
i dont believe winmodems are supported by linux, since windows takes care of
modulation/demodulation part, not the chip on the modem.

although, i have tried installing one on slack 3.blah back in the old days
when I understood nothing. I cant speak about todays modem drivers, since I
havent set one up in ages.

Actually, a surprising number can work in Linux, although my personal
preference is to just get an external hardware modem so I always know
it will work.

I got the drivers and everything on linux finally. Now when i put insmod
pctel it does whatever its supposed to but when i put insmod ptserial it
gives an error something like error: input/output insmod errors are caused
by i/o or IRQ something
any idea how i can fix this?

Are you sure your modem is an i810? I'm pretty sure the modem you gave in your other
post should use the pct789 setting, but if you really do have an i810, then use it.
As long as you are using kernel 2.4.something, you should be okay. You don't need,
nor do you want to go back to, 2.4.0.

Go to www.linmodems.org
Then go to Jan's PCTEL Resource link (www.medres.ch/~jstifter/pctel)
From Jan's site, download the pctel-0.9.2.tar.gz (I actually am using the
pctel-0.8.6.tar.gz and the directions I gave are for it, but the newer version should
be similar).
Since it is a tar.gz file,
I finally got it installed. Thanks so much for your guys help i appriciate it alot.
Derek
See the PCTel HSP howto at:
http://www.medres.ch/~jstifter/linux/pctel.html
The process is a little involved, but take it step by step and you'll be fine.

running ./configure will create/edit the makefile for you. You could use vi to edit
the makefile, but you probably want to read up on it first, because it's not very
intuitive (although very good once you get used to it).

Maybe I am missing some of the files i gotit off a "bobo"(lol) site where did you get yours?
Its in .c format so i did a make and itsaidihave to edit the "makefile" and I have no idea what to edit in it.
Quick followup.
I reinstalled the modem to COM5 as described near the end below
(in the observations/questions section), and no joy.
Reading the setserial manpage a little closer (something I
probably should have done sooner), I see that the command doesn't
like IRQ9 and indeed maps it to IRQ2.
Sorry this is kind of long, but I wanted to get all the info
in
System: Asus A7v133 mobo / Athlon 1.2G
OS: dual-boot WinMe / Mandrake 7.2
Modem: Multitech MT5634ZPX-PCI
Modem is claimed to NOT be a winmodem, and there are Linux
installation instructions in the user's manual.
