How do you mean they work now and then? Do they die completely or just indicate the wrong values? Both LCDs on my 650 were dead, I took apart the instrument cluster to try and find out why but didn't. I ended up finding a new gauge cluster on eBay for $20. Anyways, here's the pics of my dissection

The argument that magnetic is more easily stolen is useless on me as I carry a pocket knife and strap mount would be just as easily stolen. Which is worse for the paint is the real question. If you can get the pattern, no problem. Get a machine shop to cut it out of stock. No way would your arm hold up to a hacksaw job. Try making a pattern out of cardboard. Must be about 1/8~3/16" thick aluminum (he says .300") . Any shop with a band saw can cut it. I think he should have recessed

I have tried ebay, 3 salvage yards (waiting to hear back from the one listed above,) craigslist, and various google searches. I did find a night hawk forum web site which I was excited to see, however I haven't come up with anything. I did find a set on ebay, but they were being sold for $150.

Amsoil has a toll free number.  Call them and ask, because all their oils are formulated differently.  They at Amsoil do recommend 20-50 for some bikes, but I think they are Harleys, Beuels (spelling - ?), and some others.  Hondas and several others, if I recollect rightly, take a lighter grade.

The four intakes that attach the carb set to the engine. As I recall each of those is attached to the engine with 2 allen bolts each. They're not that easy to get to, but I can usually get them all off and the carb out in under 30mins. They're not that easy to get to, but I don't like putting that
