If a deep scan looks for modifications to the hosts file, I can see that as some benefit for after-the-fact notification. Now you're talking about a threat that is otherwise undetectable except for the changes it makes to files or registry areas that aren't monitored by realtime scanning. But

James, If your virtualized DC runs out if time even you configured it to get the time from an external time server, but your ESX server on which it runs on is ok, than do this Tools settings only for the DC. Leave the other VMs to sync with your time master DC. It is not VMware best practices

My UPS powers the Internet ONT connection. However the battery is waranteed for 12 months. Mine failed at 13, and they make you buy the replacement. Also, you can turn the ONT/customer router in to a transparent bridge if you have your own internal network hardware you want to handle that task.
