After missing the Tufted Duck this morning by minutes, Tom Burke, Gail
Benson and I began the search in trying to locate where this bird hangs out
after leaving the docks it has frequented overnight. Our search party was
joined by Michael McBrien and his dad, Eric Miller and Jeff Ritter who

Despite the windy and cold weather birders ventured out on the Saturday
morning bird walk to discover the flock of White winged Crossbills we saw last
week- were still in the Garden- but now they were joined by Common Redpolls!
Despite the cloudy skies we were able to make out at least 2 Red
Greetings!!
The 60th Northern Nassau Christmas count was held on Saturday, Dec 15th amid
pleasant conditions and recorded 114 species. Our 60 year average stands at
99.95 species
45,241 individuals were counted but this is a fickle number that varies widely
with the size of the Greater Scau
It was rather windy and chilly today at the eastern tip of Long Island,
with some good sized waves coming ashore on both the north and south sides
of the peninsula. Seawatching from Montauk Point (Suffolk Co.) this morning
produced a basic-plumaged adult PACIFIC LOON that flew round from the south
The pale juvenile Iceland Gull was seen again from the northeast section of
Randall's Island on the Waste Services of New York building on the Bronx
side. These buildings are east of the NY Post grounds. The gull was there

Motivated by Doug Gochfeld's report of alcids in Brooklyn yesterday, Heydi
Lopes and I went to Coney Island this morning hoping to find some good birds.
Using the bath house on the boardwalk at the end of Stillwell Avenue as a
windbreak, we scanned the water from 8am to around 11am. Braving the
Paid off to not giving up! Currently being seen in a flock of Scaup
off Lloyd Harbor Road. Observed with Eric Miller, Jeff Ritter, Tom
Burke, Gail Benson and some other birders who just arrived.

Hi All,
A short while ago, Brendan Fogarty picked out a flying ADULT BLACK-HEADED
GULL from Shore Rd in Setauket, which we briefly relocated over Little Bay
and then lost as it continued northwest.

The Tufted Duck was seen briefly around 7:15 a.m. by others but has
not been since after flying off in a north westerly direction. The
bird was apparently near the police boats which I think, is near West
Marine.
Excellent consolation birds seen so far include Dovekie and Spotted
Sandpiper. Obse
