Folks, I just installed my fresh-out-of-the-box DELL U2711 LCD monitor which
has a native resolution of 2560 x 1440. Unfortunately the screen is
unreadable as everything looks squashed ... like when you shrink an image
and lose information.
The DELL is on the digital and my LG is on the VGA.
Assuming that you're still having the problem recur after fixing it, a free
utility that will discover all shell extensions on your system is System
Info for Windows (SIW) - http://www.gtopala.com/
Autoruns.exe from sysinternals is also great for seeing all the secret stuff
that's running. I
I may be telling you to suck eggs, but have you tested with cleartype
on/off?

I tried using the cable that came in the DELL box and it has made everything
sharp and lovely. I noticed the cable has a different label on the end with
fat embossed letters DUAL LINK. So there's a trap!
Thank heavens lots of modern apps like VS2008, Internet Explorer, Word,
Excel, etc
I have a bunch of these monitors - love them.
The bandwidth required for the native resolution is HDMI/DVI. If you want
to run the display at the native resolution you will need to use:
1. DisplayPort
2. Dual-Link DVI card and cable

Use display port if you can. That presents the audio sockets on the monitor
to windows as audio in/out etc for your desktop speakers/headsets etc.
DisplayPort is the best technology available for connecting a display
(until we PC people get on the Thunderbolt bandwagon).

Great resolution.
Greg, what price does Dell sell this monitor, as single item buy?
btw, you have hijacked Peter Madden's thread

Wow – the first time in a long time that I’ve seen Australia better priced than
the USA ($1000) for these things.

Maybe better quality shipments in the US of A?
I've just looked at the dell oz website, and the 5 reviews of the screen.
build quality is criticized (2 people). Not a good sample of sales, I'm sure
- but it does alert one about possible 'mechanical' problems, independent of
the panels and

I purchased the HP ZR30w - lovely monitor, although I am on the second one (the
first one had a defect where it would flicker). I only purchased this end of
last year, but I paid over $1300US at the time.

U3011 is $1600 bucks which means probably 1400 or less through your account
rep. I would love them but it starts getting a bit exe when you're putting
them at work, home, and remote customer sites where you work. :)

Just had a quick look @ pricing, and FYI:
US$849
Damn they dropped quickly. Now if I just convince the other half around getting
another 2...

It's nice to finally see some monitors like this on the market. I've got a
30 Samsung at home 2560x1600 and at work I've got 2 x 17 monitors (plus
the laptop screen). Had monitors on order since I started here 3 months ago
and still don't have them. Internal ordering nightmare. Tempted to go and
Ah cool, I see you sorted your issue Greg. :)
Must order one of these for work. Wonder if my laptop can drive dual
link... its a Latitude E6420. Not a bad laptop, I guess. Work supplied.
David, don't you have one of these? Have you used the monitor Greg has on
it?

The complaints @ the Dell AU site were that the screen was not horizontal,
and needed to be propped with a CD

The first thing that I do when I install VS2010 on a new PC these days is
install the Color Theme Editor extension and leach all of the saturation
out of the IDE colors (making them all shades of grey). I then turn off all
of the tool bars. If you're going to do something enough that hunting in
Ah, not sure on the model of port replicator I have here, but checked and
it has two DVI's and under that two dual mode displayports (according to
the logo next to it) so by the sounds of it, if I get one of these monitors
I'll be good to go (using dusplay port most likely).
Sweeet. :)
Thanks!
HDMI v1.3 supports 2560x1600 IIRC – older versions are limited to 1900x1200 (or
similar)
Cheers

Our company bought the monitor (U2711) from Dell's website in Australia and
we found an online discount code which took about $250 off. Monitor is
about 1.5 years old and was originally about $950 but we paid around $700
for it. Also think that RACV membership gives you a discount from DELL as
