I'm pretty sure that you can do contrast control the way you
described. The flash just has to be able to be set for contrast
control so it will output half power. The body will still be metering
for proper exposure and will quench the flashes at the right time.

The net result is that APS negs are designed to outlast

considering putting up for sale my Tokina ATX 20-35 f:2.8 and Tokina

If the aperture blades are noticeably slow, the lens is worthless
without investing in a CLA, and even then it may be useless depending on
the cause of the problem. You have no way of knowing how slow the
blades are, or if they are slow a consistent amount at each exposure and
at each aperture.
21days isnt a very long warranty on a brand new camera. My MZ-S has already
been back for repair once.
Maybe these are the older models that required the software upgrade?

AL = anomalous dispersion GLASS element. The aspherics are hybrid - glass with polymer
coating like aspheric surface.

Carl Zeiss 80mm f/2.8 lens on a Novoflex bellows. It probably is
