Well, I didn't actually say it was ugly, did I? But in comparison to my
current Spotties, what isn't? No, they weren't that bad.
Yes, I loved the location of the shutter release, too. It took me quite a
while to get used to having it on the top of the camera, after the Praktica.
And, I'd for

Hi,
Along the lines of the Yashica that you mention, I've owned (in the very
distant past) a couple of Praktica (I think they were) LTL's. Big,
heavy, inelegant, but built like a tank. The metal focal plane shutter
was not too quiet, and I'm sure did cause a bit of vibration, but it was
sturdy.

I used my Spotmatic SP for my Photography class at
school. It served me well. It has all you need and
nothing more. I wouldn't suggest a camera that can be
used automatically as well. It makes it too easy to
cheat. Actually since I got my MZ30 I feel I have been
cheating a little too much. BTW I'm
That's "the MZ-M everywhere in the world except the US, or in the US, the

Be careful, my friend, because I've gone through a MG and a ME Super in the
past few months because of electronic failure.
Also, be careful of the seals in the camera, that they are not going to
mush.
That is why I've recommended the ZX-M, or in Canada, MZ-M.
It's new and will get your student t
You don't specify an SLR - so what about a rangefinder such as the
Voigtlander Bessa R. Especially if acquiring something secondhand requires a
leap of faith.

For the money, I think a ZX-M is hard to beat, especially because of the
depth-of-field function.

Jeff,
I did a lot of research into full-featured bounce/swivel dedicated flash
for my Super Program. I ended up with Ritz Camera's best and I couldn't be
happier. I forget the specs, but the guide number is something like 112
feet; you can zoom the head between 35 and 85mm focal lengths, and add
To my thinking, what makes the Minoltas an attractice choice is the ready
availability of first-rate third-party lenses in bayonet mount, for a
song--typically about half the K-mount versions, when you can find them.
Almost anytime I want, I can find in Minolta mount a Soligor CD 135/2 and
CD 100/
You migt also consider the Ricoh KR-5 Super (K1000 equiv) or XR-1 (KX
equiv). Both can often be found at very good prices on ebay.
And they both take any K-mount lens.

I do not think any camera with any features other than match needle metering

Here's a couple of other Pentaxes:
KX/KM - Better than the K1000, and often cheaper or the same price.
ME Super - Probably one of the cheapest Pentaxes on the used market.
P3 series - Inexpensive, but no DX override
Also, Ricoh, Cosina, Chinion, and Sears have K-mount bodies that are pretty

Here's my 2-cents-worth:
K-1000-- durable but pricey these days
ZX-M/MZ-M -- full-featured, modestly priced.
MX-- the classic Pentax mechanical body
X-370 & X-700 -- Minolta makes a good series here
FM2 -- the Nikon classic for about the same price as the K-1000

I think the K1000 is the most obvious choice. You can just find them
anywhere. For a new one (without repair bills for 3 years), MZ-M is not bad.
For lenses, I suggest a few secondhand primes.

I think you just described the Pentax K-1000.
