I stripped a 1400 side-by-side with a 540c and the PRAM batteries are identical except for the lead length, the 1400 lead being a bit shorter. As I had opened the 500 to replace the pram batt and had spares I swapped a 500 PRAM batt into the 1400 and it's worked fine since (about 3 months ago.

Try http://www.teleadaptusa.com for connectors between CDMA phones and PowerBooks. They have one product that is a Flash Card that intermediates between the phone and the computer and lets the phone act as amodem. I recall seeing support for StarTac. Whether or not it'll work pre-G3, I don't know.
