How much RAM is on that 5300? I found 8.1 to be sluggish with 24
megs, but when I bumped the machine up to 40 and replaced the slow
stock HD with a faster one, OS 8.1 suddenly became more responsive
than any version of System 7 I'd tried. Not to mention it is far more
stable.
64 MB.

Thanks everyone for all the info.
I did upgrade to 8.1 in the end and the problem went away. I'm going to have a go at
copying files from my PC with a CompactFlash
card seeing as that seems to be possible.
It currently only has 16Mb of RAM - I think it was only used for running M$ Word

Have you tried looking around VersionTracker or Google at all?

Thank you everyone (and especially Dan for his consoling tone) for all the
excellent advice. The saga of my 5300 entered a new and possibly more
encouraging chapter this morning, when I started everything up again and lo,
its icons showed up on the 7600's desktop. I *swear* up and down and back
Hello All,
I'm new to the list and I'm trying to bring my wife's 5300 back to a
usable life. There are two major considerations (and one minor):
1. the AC adaptor socket on the circuit board is loose. I have
repaired this twice before; disassembling the 5300 and resoldering.
But the
Friends -
Have a 3400c which has provided years of good service.
Figure I'll wipe the disk and reinstall the OS and
get a fresh start.
OS 8.6 was very stable but I thought I'd ask if the
jump to OS 9 was worth the trouble. I've lurked on
this list and I know that some people think it's
much
I have OS 9.1 on my 3400 and it's fine. It's been very stable. Check
your apps and make sure you're not going to break anything going to OS 9
but otherwise you might as well.
I would reformat using Extended since you're right there anyway.

I found a set torx of screwdrivers at home depot- they seem to work quite well. about
$15 CDN- so about $10 US. I believe the 5300 needs a torx 8.
3.this is the minor consideration: where is a good place to get torx
drivers to work on the 5300?
Feel free to contact me

You can probably find one on eBay
Hurray! This is just to pass on the good word: the 7.5.3 installer
actually worked the way it was supposed to (more or less), and installed the
system on my 5300. This bit of ho hum absolutely floored me, since it is
the first according-to-expectations event on this machine in the week (at

I'm trying to take apart my PowerBook 3400, but I'm stuck at the stage of
figuring out how to unplug the keyboard cable. Or rather, how to operate
those tiny. tiny catches on either side of the socket so it releases the
cable.
Do you push them in, pull them out, do you pull on the cable while

Yes, definitely. Even 8.1 would probably run like a slug with that little
RAM.
System 7.5.5 is probably best if you're going to be staying at System 7 for
a while.
I have an 8-meg RAM

Well, they mess up once in a while, as they say that about Duo's as

had sold my 1400 by then.
Thanks, now I've got the keyboard out (The reason I'm taking the 'Book apart

Hello Dan,
I don't have a 3400, so I can't be certain, but I doubt that the cd-drive
and the HD having the same ID will really matter much. They are the same on
my 1400, and it works just fine. (Maybe because HD is ATA, and CD ATAPI??)
Did YOU install the OS on this machine? Or did it come loaded
That's the same price and place I got mine several months ago, but I hadn't
seen any on eBay for a bit. I used the battery URL only as a reference as to
what type of battery was needed. I wouldn't pay the $39.95 U.S. + shipping
quoted on the site either when I know they have been available at $15
