If the pauses are new, your hard drive may need defragging. Norton has SpeedDisk, which is a defragging program in Norton Utilities. It would require starting from the Norton CD. (Start the 1400 and hold down the option, command, shift and delete keys together until the CD drive starts to mount.)

I'm not sure exactly how to approach this one. Some time ago I acquired a Travelstar external PCMCIA HD for my PB3400 OS 8.6. It works pretty good, though I had trouble initially moving files between the HDs due to an apparent i compatiblity with ValueFax extensions. Turn off VF and no worries.
