OK this is just getting weird now... here are the symptoms so it is continuing to not recognize all the ram, but only sometimes. about half the time it boots it shows the the built in memory test has detected an error message during boot process... I cant get it to predictably repeat this it

5300cs battery

No, it isn't running the Sonnet 466, because that card made it unusable. It is now running a Newer 250. Otherwise you have everything else correct. It sees it all sometimes, and sometimes it doesnt see it all. Sometimes it sees 48, sometimes it sees 56. This is with the Newer card. I'm not

I have 80 MB RAM. That will be good enough for OS 9.1, if you're inclined to go that route. The only caveat is that there will be times when you'll have to rely on VM. What would really do well for you would be to find a copy of RAM Doubler 9. In OS 8.6, you'll have no problems whatsoever.
