Hey all,
I recently updated my PB 1400/G3 to OS9.1. For some
reason, everything works fine, except the Startup Disk
control panel.
When I try to open it, it gives me a Type 3 error
and closes.
Is this something that someone has encountered before?
It is a minor inconvenience, excpet for the

Hi Gang,
Here's the deal. I presently have several un-networked

Yep. Froze my 1400. Had to force escape it. I threw
the whole thing out.

I have VPC 3.0 on my PB1400/G3-400/64mb. I works
moderately well for me. I currently have to run it
solo, as it will not start if anything else is
borrowing RAM. I was told that anything higher would
not be happy with only 64mb of RAM. But I have not
tested this.

No, no, no.
Sorry.
Both USB and Firewire are 32-bit PC cards (Cardbus)and
the 1400 is only equipped to handle 16-bit.
I wish that there might be some workaround, but none
has as of yet come to light.
If I am wrong PLEASE let me know. I'd love to have
these capabilities in mine as well.

No dumb questions here!
I am using a Compact Flash memory card with a pc-card
adapter.
Both of these can be found at CompUSA, etc. in the
digital camera area. Better prices can be found on the
internet, if you are willing to wait. In fact,
dealmac.com has a notice today for a compact flash 128
Thank you for this highly informative post. I'm always
amazed at the answers found here.
I an going to try to replace the batteries inside the

risking much and it may be fun. It looks like I can

At first guess, I would say that one of the
connections is partially out. It sounds like a hit
and miss connection. Hopefully.
If not, it could be something ready to go. :(

Hi Folks,
I am in the process of reconditionong the battery on
my wife's PB 170.
I have deep charged and discharged it several times,

The last two times the discharge curve has almost been
identical. It runs down to about 25% after only 6

Shawn,
8.6 is a free upgrade for 8.5, which you would have to
purchase.
If you are considering 8.5, I would recommend
upgrading to 8.6, as it has some advantages over 8.5.

Is there a web site where I can download the bookcover

It is put away in storage for the moment and one of my

So NOW I could use the template, if it is available.

It is my understanding that you can put as much RAM in
the PB1400 as will fit.
BUT... it will only recognize 64mb.
I have criptically heard of people working to breach
this barrier, but I still have no leads.
What can be done, so I am told is to add Compact Flash
memory, or the like, to the

Hi all,
Here's one for the assembled minds on the group.
When I bought my used PB170 a couple of years ago, it
had a slow 2400 modem, or thereabouts, which was not
working. Needing faster speed, I installed a 14.4 card
in its place. That card also is not working.
I left it be and went on to
I am not familiar with the Linux questions, but I do
have the Sonnet upgrade. The only issue I have noticed
is that it appears to not be happy with OS 8.5 or 8.6.
Otherwise, it is a happy camper.

I have to respectfully disagree.
I have played around with the WS a few times (never
owned one, sadly) and I actually prefer the 1400
keyboard.
Mine is crisp and concise and even works better than
the ADB keyboard which came with my C600. Even my
clumsy paws can type comfortably.

Did I catch a quick reference on the list a short
while ago, to some rumour of a method to expand the
RAM in the 1400 beyond the current maximum?
I realize that it simply is a rumour. But.. I'd be
interested in looking at the sources to keep an eye on
developments.

I feel as if I am not using it to its best advantage.
What sorts of uses could I dedicate it to? My PB1400
goes with me each day. So the 170 can be used
exclusively for whatever might be good.
