The permissions on /home were indeed the problem-- it was owned by root and
had the search/execute bits for 'group' and 'other' turned off.
Fixing this seems to have completely solved the problem.

I am having real problems with sqwebmail. Yesterday it just stopped
authenticating users. Only if you are trying to get your mail via the
webmail, if you use outlook or something you can get e-mail no problem. I
did not do anything to it and it just stopped working. When you try to log
in
I have never had to do this before. Our new billing software does not work
if we have "." dots in the user name.
I need to remove the dots in the software but have qmail deliver the un
doted mail for those few users to their doted Mail address.
How do I do this.

I just started learning Linux last week and am installing a few internet
services to include qmail.
When I send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] my /etc/maillog reports that
everything went fine, however when I try to retrieve the email using
POP3 I have no messages. And when I look in /home/bob
An interesting side-note I thought I'd add, qmail-inject from the command
line works perfectly. Using qmail-inject the message goes to
~bob/Maildir/new the way it's suppose to. So the question still stands, how
do I configure qmail-smtpd to place mail where it's supposed to?
